"Welcome to Demichurch," the carriage driver said, opening the door. The driver, like the town itself, looked plain and cheerful. It was only his lack of reaction to his strange passengers that gave away that something wasn't quite right.

The first to disembark the carriage was a young woman, no older than thirty. She was attractive, or would have been if she wasn't wearing such a derisive scowl. She quickly scanned the town before pulling up her hood to cover her face and long blond hair. A moment later, the carriage gave an almighty lurch as a giant of a man stepped out. He was wearing a similar hooded cloak, but his face was entirely wrapped in bandages. Only his black, soulless eyes were uncovered.

"They're expecting you at the main house," the driver continued, smiling ear to ear. "Unfortunately, the renovations to the castle aren't quite complete yet." He indicated the large stone structure overlooking the town.

"Uh huh," the woman replied, not giving the man another thought. The bandaged man followed behind silently. "About damn time they rebuilt the Council. No order to the chaos these days," she muttered to herself.

The bandaged man grunted in agreement.

"Welcome, Professor."

A well-dressed butler was waiting at the door to greet the travelers. He led them into a reception area where they could hang cloaks and remove shoes, though they made no move to. The butler continued to smile.

"The others are awaiting your arrival in the parlor," the man continued. "Your arrival, specifically," he added, moving slightly between the two of them.

"If you think you can stop him..." the woman replied, lowering the hood of her cloak.

The butler's smile faltered slightly, but he quickly recomposed himself. "It's simply a matter of convenience. There are only enough chairs for those invited."

"He doesn't mind standing," the woman replied, heading into the room. The bandaged man grunted again, then followed.

They both came to a halt as they entered the room. The decor was fancy, with silver candelabras and a brilliant chandelier accenting the paintings on the the walls. At the back of the room was an elaborate staircase leading up to a balcony. But much of the room looked out of place. In the center of the room was a table with five sides with seven chairs surrounding it at varying intervals. Two of the chairs were much larger than the rest, each taking up a single side of the table by themselves. Their occupants were just as large, however; two men with similar brute-like builds and cropped haircuts. The similarities ended there, however, as one had a lizard-like nose and tongue, as well as small squinty eyes while the other had normal human features. Two more men sat in regular chairs, one bald with black tattoos adorning his face and chest while the other was thin and short with green hair showing off a set of sharp, pointed teeth as he smiled at the newcomers.

The remaining three chairs were empty. Two of them were pushed slightly closer together at the far side of the room. The remaining chair was next to the tattooed man, but had more space on either side. The woman elected to take this as her seat, with her escort standing slightly behind her.

"Two more chairs to fill," said the lizard-man.

"What do you think the game is?" his partner asked.

"Probably not a battle to the death," the lizard-man replied.

"Game?" the tattooed man asked. "What makes you think there's a game?"

"Pentagram Council," the human brute replied. "Five-sided table, five members. Seven chairs. There's obviously going to be some kind of process of elimination."

"The Council has been running with just two members for a few years now," the green haired man chimed in.

"And there's been a severe imbalance of power during those years," the tattooed man interrupted.

"True," green-hair continued. "Which is why I was going to suggest they both might be retiring. Leaving the five of us in their stead."

"I have no plans to retire," said a deep voice from across the room. Without anyone noticing, a cloaked man had entered the room and taken one of the remaining chairs.

"Lord Shroud," the tattooed man said, rising to his feet. "We are honored by your presence." He bowed slightly.

"Don't go speaking for all of us," the lizard-man interrupted. "When I'm honored I'll make the effort to say so myself."

"Enough," the woman commanded. Though she was small, her voice was powerful and cut through the commotion. The lizard-man and tattooed man were still staring daggers at each other, but the conflict didn't escalate from there. "We have insufficient data to draw conclusions. I suggest we keep speculations to ourselves until our host arrives and clarifies the situation."

"Hear hear, Professor," green-hair said, smiling his jagged smile as he raised a glass in toast. Though no one had served them yet, his cup seemed to be filled with red wine.

"I had hoped you'd take this opportunity to get to know each other," said a voice from the top of the stairs. "Form a rapport, as it were. But I guess that's not in our nature."

The man leaned casually against the railing of the balcony. He was dressed in an expensive black suit with a blood-red tie. His slick black hair was combed neatly into place and his piercing blue eyes scanned the room. He looked over the group as a shepard looks over his sheep. From the reaction of the sheep, however, he may as well have been a hungry wolf.

Only Shroud remained sitting. The rest of the group were on their feet, each feeling as if they'd failed the first test.

"I am honored..." the tattooed man began.

"Yeah yeah, very honored..." the lizard-man added.

The green-haired man was still smiling as he gave an overzealous salute. "All present and accounted for, Lord Blackwood," he cackled.

Blackwood walked down the steps and took his seat. The rest of them followed suit.

"I imagine you're all curious as to why you're here," he said to the table. "I'll explain the basics before dinner and we can get to the specifics later."

No one at the table objected.

"As you guessed, you are here because the Council needs to be reformed. "Lord Shroud and I are inviting all of you to take an equal share of this responsibility alongside ourselves."

"Excuse me, my Lord," the tattooed man spoke up. "But all of us?"

"You have an objection to someone present, Baal?" Blackwood asked. It was an innocent enough question, but the man flinched anyway.

"Of course not," Baal replied. "It wasn't the individuals I was questioning, rather the numbers. The Pentagram Council..."

"Failed," Blackwood interrupted. "It was created to maintain balance and order in the darkness. Formed to keep the Dark Lord Dracula at bay while concealing our presence from his enemies. A loose alliance that draws strength when needed and melds with the shadows when not."

There was a pause. "You say it failed?" the green-haired man asked. He was the only one crazy enough to ask the question, and even he didn't smile as he said it.

"Indeed, Hector," Blackwood replied. "Dracula was almost returned to this world. The members of the Council were too enthralled with their own power to work together to stop it. And now our forces are weaker than ever while the Heroes of Veros exert unchecked influence."

"That's a separate issue," the woman chimed in. "The Heroes are unchecked because the Council suffered great losses against Dracula's forces. Three of its members..."

"Were still alive when the Battle of Veros had ended," Shroud interrupted. "Their deaths occurred later."

"How...?" the woman asked, incredulous that her information could be so wrong.

"The first died in a desperate bid for power, Professor Franks," Blackwood replied. "He sensed discord among our ranks and attempted to solidify his position before others could take action. He gambled and lost, having his own power drained from him in the process. In his weakened state, he succumbed to lesser demons unworthy to even speak his name."

"And the others?" the lizard-man asked. "How did they die?"

"Quickly and painlessly, Scale," Blackwood answered. "Lord Shroud and I made sure they did not suffer."

"You?" the other brute asked.

"They were ineffectual leaders, Link," Blackwood said, not looking the least bit remorseful. "Their inaction nearly killed us all. But while I did not regret their deaths, it revealed a startling weakness in the Council's makeup. Five members served to maintain balance, but one death was enough to allow a coup from within. We decided some changes needed to be made."

"We need more members, for a start," Shroud added.

"Makes it harder to upset the balance," Professor Franks noted. "Assuming all the members hold comparable levels of power."

The group all looked at each other.

"You were all hand-picked for your exceptional capabilities," Blackwood assured them. "Every one of you is as dangerous as the next. And while Lord Shroud and I may have a more frightening reputation than any of you, I can assure you our actual powers are not as far beyond your reach as you assume."

Link and Scale both looked up curiously, trying to wrap their heads around this new information. Baal and Franks both looked skeptical, wondering if they were being strung along. Hector took a long drink from his cup, which seemed to be refilling itself.

"But there are other qualifications necessary," Shroud said, breaking the tension of the moment.

"Indeed," Blackwood continued. "A simple willingness towards action is no longer enough. We have to clean up the mess our predecessors left."

"Bring the forces of darkness back in line," Baal stated.

"To start," Shroud replied.

"Bringing unity to our side will lead to a war none of us want to be bothered with," Blackwood explained. "We work best when we're aligned but autonomous. Maintain distance, prevent infighting, and provide assistance only when necessary. If a necromancer is slain by a village hero, none of us lift a finger. If that hero organizes raiding parties on our forces over a particular area, we find a way to quietly dissuade them."

"But our enemies are already organized," Shroud added.

"You want us to kill the Heroes of Veros?" Scale asked. A jagged smile spread across his face.

"Not simply kill them," Blackwood corrected. "Erase them. Pick them off one by one in seemingly unrelated circumstances. Let their isolation be their weakness, so they don't know they're under attack until it's too late. We've gathered vital intelligence on many of them, which we will share with all of you. The specifics of the attack are up to you, though the timetable will have to be spread out slightly to avoid suspicion. I highly recommend working together in cases of family, if only to coordinate separating them."

Again the group eyes each other across the table.

"So who is going to kill who?" Scale asked eagerly.

"Whom," Baal corrected him.

"I don't know Whom," Scale replied. "Is he one of the warlocks?"

"As I said," Blackwood interrupted. "We'll deal with specifics after dinner. For now, rest assured that we did more than research your abilities. We know some of you hold grudges against certain members of the guild, and others have certain...preferences when it comes to battle. We've taken these into consideration and believe you'll be pleased with your assignments."

The butler appeared again leading the first of several trays of covered dishes. As he placed them in front of each guest, he removed the lid to reveal the contents. Link got a large, rare steak. Scale got a similar meal, though his meat looked like it might not have been cooked at all. Baal's dish was veal with a port wine sauce. Hector was eating grapes and a soft cheese. Reyna had a hearty stew. Shroud had a salad. The final dish, placed in front of Lord Blackwood, appeared to be a large slice of liver.

"Enjoy," Blackwood said as the butler filled each of their glasses. Most of them had wine, though Shroud had water and Hector's glass was already full. "And let this be the beginning of a new era."

He raised his glass in toast. The rest of the table followed suit.
